When a cloud based smart home processes a command, the request leaves your house, travels through your internet service provider and travels to a data center often hundreds or thousands of miles away, gets processed on their servers, and then makes the return trip before your command even runs at your house. One Raven collapses that path. Your command goes from our home server sitting in your house, which immediately relays that command directly to the device in your home. The whole round trip is measured in feet, not miles, and never touches equipment that you don’t own.

Most smart home security comes down to a password protecting your cloud account. If someone steals it, they can control your home from anywhere on earth. One Raven works differently. When you use the One Raven mobile app, your phone creates a cryptographic secret and so does your home server, creating a secure end to end connection that can’t be seen or manipulated. Even adding additional mobile phones requires authorization from another user in your home, or by being physically present in the home itself.

Matter and Thread solve two different problems. Matter is the shared language: it defines what a device is and what it can do. So a sensor from one brand can talk to a controller from another without any translation. Thread is the road the language travels on: a network where devices talk directly to each other, built from the ground up for lower power and reliability. Matter can run over wi-fi too, but pairing it with thread is what makes a home genuinely local first. Devices that don’t need the cloud, don’t lean on your wi-fi, and don’t drain their batteries staying in touch. One language, one road, no middleman.

The difference is what the radio does when nothing is happening. A wi-fi device has to constantly stay in touch with your router. Checking in, holding the connection open, using a radio originally designed for laptops and phones, where a wall outlet was assumed. It burns power even when idle. Thread devices play by different rules. A battery powered thread device sleeps almost all the time, waking for just a few milliseconds to check in with a nearby plugged in device and then goes back to sleep. The result is a radio that sips power instead of drinking it. Now you can replace batteries every year instead of every season. Matter certification means a device speaks the protocol correctly and securely. It doesn’t guarantee the device shows you everything it can do. Manufacturers choose which features to make available through Matter, and some hold capabilities back. A lock that pairs fine but hides its auto lock settings inside of the manufacturer’s own app, or a bulb that connects but doesn’t reliably report whether it’s on. Matter compatible is the floor, not the ceiling. So we test past the logo. Every device on our compatibility list has been verified in a real One Raven home. Pairing, full features, responsiveness, and how it behaves after a power outage. If it’s on our list, it doesn’t just connect, it works the way you’d expect.
